7 Partners lead the 7 DO-HEALTH recruitment centres in 5 European Countries
The scientific coordinator and PI of DO-HEALTH, Prof. Bischoff-Ferrari (University of Zurich will recruit 552 seniors), is the PI of the Zurich recruitment centre. She is a geriatrician and has a formal clinical research education (epidemiology and biostatistics and nutrition — Doctor of Public Health degree from Dept. of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health). Prof. Rizzoli (University of Geneva will recruit 200 seniors) is the PI of the Geneva recruitment centre and is a member of the IOF board of directors and an international leader in the field of osteoporosis and nutrition. Prof. Felsenberg (Charité, Berlin will recruit 350 seniors) is the PI of the Berlin recruitment centre and is an international expert and collaborator in many international osteoporosis trials on DEXA-related outcomes and methodology, including vertebral morphology and muscle mass. He will standardize and quality control all DEXA-assessment centres in DO-HEALTH. Prof. Da Silva (University of Coimbra will recruit 300 seniors) is the PI of the Coimbra recruitment centre and is a past president of EULAR and involved in many international efforts around musculoskeletal health. Prof. Vellas (University of Toulouse will recruit 300 seniors) is the PI of the Toulouse recruitment centre and is an international leader in cognitive health and the PI of several large trials . He will be able to connect DO-HEALTH findings to the Gerontonet and many international teaching efforts in Geriatrics that are directed by Toulouse. Prof. Kressig and PD Dr. Norbert Suhm (University of Basel will recruit 250 seniors) are the PIs of the Basel recruitment centre and contribute expertise in gait analysis, dual tasking and functional recovery after fracture. Prof. Blauth (University of Innsbruck will recruit 200 seniors) is the PI of the Innsbruck recruitment centre and is an international leader in Geriatric fracture care.
5 Other University Partners
Prof. Watzl (Max Rubner Institute, Karlsruhe) is a nutrition and laboratory expert who will support the consortium with his knowledge on omega-3 fatty acids and will measure in his laboratory novel markers of immunity. Prof. Felson (Manchester University) is an internationally acknowledged leader in osteoarthritis epidemiology. He is the PI of the Framingham Osteoarthritis study and several exercise and drug trials in osteoarthritis. The DO-HEALTH osteoarthritis module is under his supervision. Prof. Kanis (IOF, Sheffield University) is the leading fracture epidemiologist who developed the FRAX tool in collaboration with the WHO. He supported DO-HEALTH in its design and definition of fracture endpoints. As the president of the IOF, he supports DO-HEALTH both through the IOF (International Osteoporosis Foundation) as an impact partner of DO-HEALTH and through Sheffield University, in collaboration with Prof. McCloskey, who will lead the FRAX module in DO-HEALTH. Prof. Hofbauer (Dresden University) contributes his expertise in novel bone and muscle biomarkers that define the interaction of bone and muscle and will perform the measurement of myostatin and sclerostin at his laboratory. Prof. Maetzel (Natural Person, Visiting Professor University of Zurich) is an experienced health economist and will build a computer model simulating the relationship between nutritional markers and health outcomes to define the cost-benefit of the DO-HEALTH interventions.
1 Impact Partner IOF
The IOF will communicate osteoporosis-related findings on a broad level and support efforts of including DO-HEALTH findings, if relevant, into guidelines of improved osteoporosis care at older age. IOF will also organize the international DO-HEALTH symposium.
3 Industry Partners
In an innovative Private Public Partnership, 3 large industry partners are included in DO-HEALTH: DNP, NESTEC, Roche-Diagnostics. The 3 partners support DO-HEALTH as the largest project to support healthy aging in European seniors. Their partnership will ensure a leverage effect in research and innovation in the field of health, healthcare, diagnostics and nutrition. Further, from a scientific perspective, combining the EC funds with the support (i.e. study medication vitamin D/omega-3 fats, assays for biomarkers) from the 3 industry partners, the Private Public Partnership allowed the design of a large clinical trial to test 3 public health interventions.
4 SME Partners
Small to Medium Size Enterprises (SME) are supported within the FP7 Framework program of the EC and are well integrated in DO-HEALTH. The SMEs ensure innovation in the execution of clinical trials (FDS, gut pictures), support the day-to-day management of DO-HEALTH (NOVAMEN), and perform the clinical monitoring (Pharmalys) of DO-HEALTTH according to GCP guidelines. FDS will design a user-friendly, safe and direct touch-screen based data entry system for DO-HEALTH allowing that data collected at all recruitment centers is immediately stored and transferred to the DO-HEALTH data base. Gut pictures will create an innovative software tool to instruct a validated home exercise program to be tested in DO-HEALTH. The tool will include an animated video with motivational elements and a booklet. FDS and Gut pictures create the website of DO-HEALTH and will design a user friendly software to communicate DO-HEALTH findings at the end of the trial.
